What is a food sensitivity test?
Food sensitivity tests can help identify potential food triggers that may cause things like headaches, bloating, gas, and other digestive problems. These tests are not intended to diagnose you, but rather give insight into potential sensitivities and/or allergies, giving you a launching pad for eliminating foods from your diet. It is recommended that you consult your physician after taking these tests to fully understand the results and the best next steps for you.
The two most common types of tests include:
- IgG reactivity test: Analyzes how immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies respond to food antigens
- IgE reactivity test: Analyzes how immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies respond to allergens in foods
However, there are also other tests like hair strand tests that use bioresonance to analyze potential sensitivities, stool sample tests that look at the candida, parasites, and bacteria in your gut microbiome, and other emerging technologies that give a glimpse into your food sensitivities.
How accurate are at-home food sensitivity tests?
At-home food sensitivity test accuracy depends. The ones on this list have reasonable accuracy that gives you insight into potential sensitivities and food triggers. They are overseen by physicians and clinicians and tested in CLIA-certified laboratories to ensure they are tested under quality circumstances. However, if you are concerned that you have a severe allergy or sensitivity, you should consult your doctor. These tests are not designed to diagnose.
What to consider when choosing an at-home food sensitivity test?
One important consideration when looking for an at-home food sensitivity test is to look at what it’s actually testing. IgG tests look at food sensitivities, whereas IgE tests look at food allergies. This is an important distinction, as IgG tests are not designed to tell you if you will have a strong allergic reaction to a food. Additionally, many of the brands on this list offer varying levels of comprehensiveness for the tests. Some test only a few foods (15-40), whereas others test a wide range (200+). Consider what you are hoping to get from the test — a comprehensive approach testing lots of foods and niche ingredients or a more basic look at common foods like dairy, eggs, and nuts. The more complex tests tend to be more expensive, so you could start with a less comprehensive one and go from there.
Also consider the age range for the tests. Some of these can be done for the whole family, while others are 18+ or offer specific separate tests for children and babies. Another note is that these tests are not available in New York State, as such mail-in biomarker tests are not legal there. If you are in New York, you will not be able to order at-home tests.
Does insurance cover at-home food sensitivity tests?
